Roanoke River Lighthouse & Maritime Museum Plymouth Reviews
For keeps. Jun 06, 2015
Another wonderful freebie (donations are asked at front door), right in downtown Plymouth. This is a replica of the screwpile lighthouses that were typical along this stretch of coast. There were three different beacons installed along the river by Plymouth, one apparently was demolished and dumped into the Roanoke by Union troops in an attempt to block the ironside Albemarle from getting out.
It is a lovely lighthouse and being a reproduction, quite elegant inside. The beautiful feature is a winding wooden staircase. I was a bit disappointed by the lack of exhibits offering glimpses into lighthouse legacy, but learned (too late) there is an adjunct to the museum across the street stuffed with artifacts and information. Somewhat surprising I missed the other space, since I had an extended chat with the hostess. She was a bit distracted, though. They were offering helicopter rides as part of the Bear Fest activities and she was glued to a live camera feed from the chopper, streaming across her iPad, lol.
A pleasant stop if only to enjoy the beautiful setting along the river – a very nice space at the end of town. Hours are limited (11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday), so be sure to plan accordingly. And don’t forget to go across the street to visit the rest of the museum. Perhaps you can tell me what is in there!
