When you're on the road in Ireland (and indeed Europe in general) it is advisable to use ViaMichelin as your online mapping/route planning solution. The AA also has an excellent route planner that gives comprehensive directions.

The other computer-based alternative is to purchase Microsoft AutoRoute, the UK/Ireland/European version of Microsoft Streets & Trips (US). It can be purchased from Amazon and most major computer retail stores.

It is always useful to have a map of the entire country with the major roads listed on it, and one of these is available for free download from:

If you prefer to use traditional maps over online mapping solutions, check out Ordnance Survey Ireland's website, where you can buy many maps for a reasonable price. "The Complete Road Atlas of Ireland" is available on this site and costs 12.50 Euro.

Be aware that there is a lot a road construction going on at present. Predominately linking Dublin to the major cities. These roads are opening in phases as sections are completed. They may not appear on some maps and definitely aren't on SAT NAV systems.
