Rivoli Hotel Casablanca Reviews
Still a Grande old Lady of the Atlantic. May 20, 2012
Rivoli Hotel Casablanca Morocco
We took a taxi from the International airport to our Hotel in Casablanca, a journey of over an hour.
We were met by porters who took our luggage to the front desk, who were expecting us. Check in was painless and we were soon escorted to our room with porters bringing our luggage and after a small tip they left.
The room was very spacious and although the décor was tired and dated, it was nonetheless reasonably clean and uncluttered. The beds were warm and comfortable with clean sheets and pillowcases. The bathroom was small but clean and well stocked with towels and the usual assorted toiletries and face-cloths. The shower flow was fast as I like it and no issues with continuous hot water supply throughout our stay at the Rivoli.
We were on the 5th floor overlooking the large outdoor leisure courtyard and swimming pool, and a view out towards the King Hussain II Mosque and the Atlantic Ocean beyond that. Great view, and a beautiful day in Casablanca.
The Hotel lobby and front foyer area screams of past decadence and opulence, and although the Rivoli still looked good, she did show her age in places. Still she must have been a grand Lady in her hey-day which I was told was in the 30s to 50s. The internet suite is located on the ground floor opposite the front desk, and you can go online via your own laptop etc. The bar is just along from the internet suite and hosts evening karaoke, for both hotel guests and locals, and I was told can be very entertaining indeed. Local and foreign beers readily available at the bar.
The laundry service was adequate, although my roomy lost some items of clothing which was more annoying than essential. The large open air swimming pool was a welcome respite from the heat of the day, and the many sun loungers ensured a restful afternoon nap after a swim, and before dinner.
The staff were friendly and helpful, and gave advice when asked. The Hotel is ideally situated in the heart of the central hub of the city, and afforded easy access to banks, and supermarkets as well as the usual street vendors and market areas selling all sorts of wonderful crafts, drinks and food.
About a 40 minute walk from the Hotel heading towards the Atlantic ocean and you come face to face with one of the iconic landmarks of Casablanca, the King Hussain II Mosque, which apparently can cater for 25,000 worshippers indoors, and a courtyard outside for another 20.000 people, gives you an idea of the sheer scale of this mosque. The detailed and ornate ceramic tile work is extrodinary.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Rivoli Hotel, and in Casablanca itself. We would not hesitate to recommend the Rivoli as a reasonably priced, comfortable place to stay whilst in Casablanca. A word of caution though, my female travel buddy was warned about wearing her shorts around the Mosque, lucky she anticipated some cultural resistance and brought a longer skirt to change into, she also advised women to carry a scarf, preferably a black one in your bag, just in case some of the locals take offence etc, otherwise most enjoyable indeed.
