Outstanding Overview of Beautiful Berlin Jul 30, 2005
RIVER SPREE SIGHTSEEING CRUISE
Berlin is full of surprises! It is surrounded by numerous waterways; a network of canals was built around the Spree and Havel Rivers in the 1800s. Germany’s capital has more bridges than Venice and more trees than Paris.
Most of the sightseeing cruises depart near the new Al-Tegal U-Bahn train station on the city’s northwest edge. Vendors offer various tours from one to four hours. The prices in 2005 seemed reasonable, ranging from 9-16€, depending on the selection.
I took a one-hour ride along the banks of the Spree, the main river that runs east to west through the heart of the city. Our ship, the Spree Perle, offered good views of many of Berlin’s most important buildings, including: Al-Tegal U-Bahn train station, New Parliament, Reichstag, Friedrichstrasse Railway Station, Pegamon Museum, Bode Museum, Alexanderplatz TV Tower, Berlin Cathedral, National Gallery, Federal Chancellery and Congress Hall. The guide on this particular tour narrated in German; however, headphone tapes in other languages were available.
I heartily recommend a River Spree sightseeing cruise; it’s a great way to get an overview of beautiful Berlin.
