Supported by the WWF, this nature reserve is a wonderful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Naples. The reserve is essentially the crater of the Campi Flegrei. Apart from the greenery, there is this lake within the centre of the reserve. Many different species of wildlife, including a variety of birds such as heron and geese, can be located at the reserve.

The reserve is a really nice site to walk around. The staff at the entrance provide you with a basic map which has various trails you can follow. The trails are easily marked out and are of various lengths and difficulty, so there should be something for everyone! When I was there in the autumn, the cyclamen were in flower and although I didn’t see many birds, you could hear many different types of birdsong through the woods.

Entrance price is around 5 Euros.

As a kid I used to go to the Astroni and catch wood frogs, which I kept in the tub with water. There were also Gnu brought in from Africa, which roamed freely in the crater (1972). I remember finding lots of mail that was stolen from the post office and sifted through before being dumped in the woods.
