Lovely mansion with beautiful garden Oct 25, 2010
Rippon Lea House & Garden (Est 1868) is an estate with an historic mansion (which you can tour) and a vast garden (more than 14 acres). The mansion used to be the family home of Sir Frederick Sargood, a wealthy merchant.

Situated about 7 kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD, we took the train (the Sandringham Line) to Elsternwick (a suburb of Melbourne). A five minute walk to get to the estate.

At the entrance is a little souvenir shop with some restaurant facilities (coffee, pastries etc.).

The entrance fee is AU $ 12 including admittance to the house. The fee for the garden only is AU $ 7. There are special tariffs for concession, families and groups.

Visiting the house means a guided tour by a volunteer. We got our tour by a nice, enthusiast lady who told us a lot about the house and the family. You can visit the basement of the house (with the kitchen and servants rooms) and the garden on your own.

Inside the mansion you can take photos without using the flash.

For more photos (mansion and garden) see my blog!

Opening hours: September to April daily from 10 am to 5 pm.

May to August from 10 am to 4 pm (Thursday to Sunday).
