Many Catalans consider Ripoll to be the birthplace of Catalonia, as it was the home of Guifred the Hairy, first count of Barcelona. While Guifred's medieval dynasty ruled Catalonia for 500 years, today his home is just a small town in the Pyrenees, remarkable only for the lovely monastery of Santa Maria which sits at its heart.

A two-hour train ride from Barcelona, Ripoll might be a little far for a day-trip, but it can make a useful base for hiking and visiting other mountain towns. The town is close to such sights as the scenic Vall de Nuria and the village of Sant Joan de les Abadesses.

I've come here on several occasions. It's supposed to be excelent for skiing, but I've only ever been during the summer. This valley offers a lot of activities for tourists. Famous for its church with a statue of Mary. You can take a train up the mountain into the valley, the stop leaves you right by the hotel and church.
