The Riordan Mansion was built back in 1904 by the 2 Riordan families and arguably the founders of what Flagstaff, AZ is today. This 13,000 square foot, 40 room mansion was built in arts and crafts style architecture.
These families were ahead of their time for the western US. This mansion was built to include indoor plumbing, huge freezers and closets, utilized skylights and architecture allowing natural light into all rooms, and created a ventilation system (before A/C) that routed the wind throughout the home to cool it in the summer.
The brothers purchased and ran the local logging mill, created the dam that is what is now Lake Mary, worked to get electricity, and hospitals to the area, built the local church, helped in establishing the local forestry unit and conservation, and brought skiing to the area. Though the mill is no longer in operation, the town would not be what it is today without the foresight of these families.
It is an interesting one hour tour for those into architecture and history of different areas. Very informative. There is also a free outdoor self-guided walking tour that you can do before or after your tour.
