Adventures in Brazil - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Carnaval 2008!!!!!
posted by:

After 3 days of travelling, we finally made it back to Rio de Janeiro!!! The journey from Bahia was an interesting one and a VERY LONG one, at that!  As usual, we met some interesting folks along the way, who helped us out a great deal and who will remain in our memories forever. . . I had mixed feelings about heading back to Rio, a bit of excitement and sadness overcame me.  Sad to have to leave Bahia and the Almeira family, but happy to be continuing the adventure…

Day 2: Rio de Janeiro
posted by:

Sorry I haven't updated in awhile.  This is just a short note to say that I will upload more pictures when I get back into the U.S.  I ran into a little trouble, but everything is OK. Today we went to Sugar Loaf.  The views of the city from there were just amazing! Tomorrow is our last day here and it will most likely be spent on the beach.  This has been an incredible trip!

This, along with the coming journal entries, is coming very late, but what the hell.  This was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.  Very, very frightening though, but much more inside the plane that outside of it.

My first awakening in South America
posted by:

The last two days we have been doing a buggy tour of Rio. Yesterday the weather was awful for touring in an open-topped car, but it was nice anyway and we saw the districts of Urca, Botafogo, Lapa, Santa Teresa and Centro. The stairs at Lapa are very famous and we had a bonus in that the artist Seleron was there and showed us all the newest additions (it´s made of tiles donated by people from all over the world). Today was a wicked day, tried to see the Corcovado (Statue of Christ) but foil…

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil -› -› ...
Pictures are worth a thousand words.  Unfortunately, those words are "What does a gay batman look like?" unfortunately, this PC does not use DVD´s, only CD´s, and all the pics are on the DVD, so you´ll just have to wait a bit until you see me as an incan love warrior. (Aha - we now have the technology).

Carnival
posted by:

We spent Carnaval in the hilltop artists’ enclave of Santa Teresa - the only place we could find last-minute lodging.  We saw the touristy things: the giant Jesus statue, Ipanema and Copacabana.  And our B&B host Pedro took us rock climbing in an improbably dense state forest overlooking the city.  But the main focus our stay was Carnaval in all its hedonistic glory. Although to be honest, it’s not what you’d think.  We were prepared to be hustled, groped,…

The end of the road (but what an end!!)

Arrived in Foz de Iguassu and quickly decided that I needed to sacrifice seeing the falls from the Brazilian side and get a flight to Rio de Janeiro as quickly as possible to try and do my number 1 destination of South America justice. Managed to get a decent price for the flight and was safely in Rio by 6.  Disconcerting that having planned to do a little sightseeing, it was already starting to go dark (before I realised that although east of Argentina, Brazil actually an hour…

Leaving Home
posted by:
Nov 17, 2006 - Jan 18, 2008
It feels kind of funny start writing about this trip 11 months after it started. Well, what else can be said about leaving home? An exciting (for all that's to come) and sad (for those left behind) moment. I can still remember the last time I saw each one of my family members and friends, and I would only see them again after a whole year.. Kind of a scary - and again, exciting - feeling: leaving everything that you have behind, and leaping into the unknown. You all know how it goes: thro…

Amazing Rio!
posted by:
Sep 04, 2007 - Jan 07, 2008
Woke up early this morning for our hike up the "big fella". We passed people who wanted to make some money off us, one guy telling us that there were 2 favelas in the area (where????), and some saying it would take us about 3 hours to reach the top. Well.... it took us only an hour and a half (tough Kiwis... I mean c'mon, we can do anything!!). It wasnt the best view, it was overcast so cloud was covering the views, but on a clear day this would be amazing. Jesus himself wasnt as spectac…

Finally in Rio, very late but I am here!

On Saturday June 30th I went with my 3 new friends from England to book a trip to Foz do Iguacu. We did that and found a pretty cheap flight there for Sunday July 1st. The day was full on predicaments as Jack was having problems with his bank card and couldnt get money and was having difficulties phoning the bank in England so they could fix the problem. He then figured he would exchange his travellers cheques but the travel agency we were at didnt accept travellers cheques and all banks are …

In transit - again
posted by:

Now I don't want to seem at all arrogant! (that wouldn't be like me at all aye... lol) but I thought I knew a thing or two about international travel!  Turns out, always something new to learn.  I blindly let the travel agent lead me and didn't think to double check connections and the route.... She didn't really do the best job!  I ended up having to stay on the plane at Sao Paulo and coming to Rio De Janeiro to wait.... while several planes have since left from Sa…
