Samba Lessons with Live Band May 21, 2012
When my friends and I travelled Brazil, we said right from the start we wanted to do samba lessons in Rio. We found the perfect bar in Lapa, a lively little neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro, perfect! We stumbled across this gem when we visited Lapa one afternoon to find the famous Lapa stairs and decided on the spot this was where we'd spend our evening.
Before we even set foot into the bar that evening we could hear the live music from the street. From the outside it looks small, but once inside you see the full scale of the place! The decor is amazing, old vintage pieces adorning every wall, retro furniture... it is a snap happy travellers dream!
After snaking through the dancing mass of bodies we were guided to a table extremely close to the band. We ordered couple of bottles of wine between us and a caipirinha each (Brazil's national cocktail, made with cachaça (sugar cane rum), sugar (preferably raw sugar)- be warned they can be very strong!) and a bowl of olives and other nibbles. Prices were average, as I find most things are in Brazil, not cheap, but not overly expensive.
The dancing... basically a free for all! Locals teach you, and you just get up and join right in! It was great to see people of all ages dancing happily together, having such a good time, and the band was incredible.
After exhausting ourselves dancing and drinking too much wine, we decided to wander the whole venue (all 3 floors), so we could see all the amazing furniture. There was an old dentists chair near the entrance (great photo opportunity!), and upstairs, stained glass windows, antique telephones, clocks, puppets, an old piano and trumpets, amongst a hundred other pieces. They even had a vintage car in near the dancing area!
It really was such a unique bar, and the music and dancing lessons were some of the best I've had. I hope one day to return!
