The area called "the Rio Dulce" begins at the mouth of the river on the Bahia de Amatique at the Garifuna town of Livingston. Going upriver, one passes through a spectacular steep walled canyon lined with jungle vegetation and wildlife. The river then widens into a small lake, El Golfete, the shores of which are lined with beautiful locations, Mayan settlements and a manatee reserve. The river then narrows and passes the towns of Fronteras and El Relleno where there is an abundance of hotels, restaurants, marinas, services for boaters, medical care, communications and transportation. A little further and the river widens into 590 square kilometer Lake Izabal, the largest lake in Guatemala.

... this country never lets me go! It is so densely packed with all kinds of things to do that I´m almost lost why at all I would go anywhere else! Having spent the last three weeks in the selva of Peten and Alta Verapraz, I hardly had a chance to update my friends on where I was and what was on my plate. And here´s a brief summary of my 'travel incidences'.
Meeting and befrending Guatemalans is good of a reason to visit the country. Juan Carlos (aka TravBuddy john 1112…

Pirates of the Carribean
Don´t you like the sound of this place? Rio Dulce. Sweet River. Sounds nice, right? Ugh! We met up with one of the middle men again as we got off the bus. He suggested a cheap hostal in the jungle called Casa Perico. So, we jumped on the free 15 minute lancha ride down the river. This ride took us thru mangroves. It felt like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland except the bugs flying around weren´t j…

At 9am after having smoothies in glasses the size of massive soup bowls we headed out on a boat for a tour of the local sights. Our first stop was a bird island where we saw lots of egrets and cormorants. We then headed to a natural hot springs where we went on a tour of a really dark musty cave that had bats in it. We went in water almost up to our waists so we had to take our shorts off and just go in in our bather bottoms. We had all been given torches and when you shone them into the wate…
