Rio-Antirio Bridge Patras Reviews
Truly An Engineering Masterpiece Aug 09, 2013
Being one of the attractions in Patras (Greece), this cable- stayed bridge links the cities of Rio (in Patras) and Antirio on the western part of mainland Greece. As per record, the five-span, four-pylon cable-stayed deck of this 2252-meter long / 28-meter wide structure is said to be the second longest cable-stayed deck in the world (second to Millau Viaduct, 2460 meters). It is clearly noticed that the bridge parts were not casted directly to the pylons but were connected using jacks and dampers which I believed was done to facilitate free movement thus creating resistance to earthquake. The bridge has two vehicle lanes per direction, an emergency lane, and a pedestrian sidewalk.
I've been to this place twice and I'm quite interested on its engineering point of view. Anyone of you planning a trip to Patras, come and have a stop on this bridge before hitting the town. You won't regret the time you will spend here.
