Paro's inimitable fortress that stands loud and proud Dec 06, 2016
I'd be surprised if anyone visited Paro, even transited through it and didn't see this majestic behemoth. Perched on a hill overlooking the airport, this magnificent beauty can be seen regardless of whether you're flying in, driving through or sightseeing. No wonder it's been listed as a contender for UNESCO World Heritage Site!

The visit here lasts roughly 2 hours. I'd say the only thing of inconvenience, particularly to senior citizens would be the sheer amount of steps one needs to climb - both to get into, and within.

There's the customary courtyard, followed by a temple which provides sweeping views of the airport, town, valley, etc.

The most striking thing to me was the great artwork. Sure, I'd seen a lot of murals and paintings across the various dzongs in Bhutan and many times, more of the same, But something about Paro's paintings hit the right note: it's probably the ambience and the sheer vastness of the paintings and the canvas.

A must-visit place no doubt.
