Rila is the highest mountain range in Bulgaria and on the Balkan peninsula, the sixth in Europe.
Rila is the home of several major Bulgarian a-must-visit sites.
The Seven Rila Lakes - group of lakes with glacier origin located at 2100-2500 meters elevation. Each lake holds name related to its most characteristic feature. If any of you are near the Rila/Sofia area, and have a couple days, I highly recommend doing this hike! It's relatively strenuous, and takes about 4-5 hrs from the mountain resorts, but totally worth it. I did it in late Sept. and there was already a bit of snow at the top, so probably April - September would be the best time to go.
