Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam Reviews

If you like art you should visit the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
The museum owns a collection of almost 1 million pieces wich makes it the largest arts and history museum in our country. The most famous pieces of the collection are the works by the greatest masters from the 17th century. It has paintings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Johanns Vermeer, Jan Steen and Frans Hals. The most wel-known painting would be the "Nachtwacht" by Rembrandt van Rijn. There are audiotours you can take in a lot of different languages and you can also arrange for tours with guides who can tell more about the paintings.
If you're under 18 it's free to visit the museum.
Adults pay 10 euro's.

The Rijksmuseum is definitely a place I want to visit in Amsterdam. I'd love to see the Rembrandts and other Dutch Golden Age paintings!

This is only one of several museums in Amsterdam. However, our tour began with a tour of this museum. The museum is under a long term restoration which is due to be completed in 2010. Because of the renovation many of the displays are smaller or held to specific Masterpieces. Our tour gave us plenty of time to stroll those sections that were open and enjoy the wonderful art work and items from the 17th century. For anyone who is interested in art this is a must see. If you can wait until the rebuilding and modernization is complete it will certainly be a wonderful experience.

Hector, the renovations began in 2002. When we were there in May 2005 only one wing, about 20% of the museum was open.

Mark you could always ask to be seeled into a glass enlosure, but you'd have to be perfectly still and not flinch if people took your picture.

I've been to this museum, certainly one of the best museums in Amsterdam. I was there on early november 2005, don't remember the renovations though...when did they start?
