Art Nouveau Riga May 22, 2012
The historic center of Riga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It contains the greatest concentration of Art Nouveau style architecture anywhere in the world. The original city was a Hanseatic League trading seaport and Riga still maintains elements of its medieval past in the architecture including bastions and city walls and towers. The center is easily walkable and is very pleasant on a nice day. There are shops and restaurants and chocolatierias. The streets are cobblestoned so a good pair of shoes is recommended. Riga also a district that showcases it's wooden houses that were built in the 1800's entirely out of wood and the quality and quantity of these houses are also part of the historic center.
