First Cistercian Abbey in northern England Aug 30, 2010
Yorkshire must be the top county in England for abbey remains. This is one of the best Yorkshire abbeys.

It was founded by Cistercian monks from France in Norman times and among the ruins it is still possible to see a few bits of Romanesque architecture. Like many of the wealthier abbeys, it was extended considerably in subsequent centuries and hence most of the ruins exhibit the pointed arches of early Gothic.

Its amazing beauty and setting in the Ryedale valley in the North York Moors did not save it from the destroyers of monasteries in henry VIII's dissolution in the 16th century. Its ruins are now owned by English Heritage and many visitors come every year.
