Always buy a ticket! Jun 29, 2011
This is probably quite a boring review but feel it could be quite important.

Whilst in Berlin, when using the U-Bahn or Metro, always remember to buy a ticket, even if you're only planning on riding it for a few stops. It can be easy to just jump on and hope that you won't get caught, however the conductors are very strict. The ticket prices are only a small amount and are much cheaper than the fine that you will incure.

I spent 2/3 days in Berlin and knew a lot of friends that didnt bother, of which a great number got caught and forced to pay +50 euros.

Very true, there are often guards checking, not worth the risk. Would add to this, you can buy tickets at machines at all stations with Euros or a Maestro card. You must validate your ticket (get it stamped) before boarding or you will still get fined. There are machines for this on the platforms. They are little red or yellow boxes on the top of a steel pole.
