Using the street-side motorbike riders for travel in Vietnam May 20, 2011
While in Vietnam, tourists will see many men/motorbike riders on the intersections of 2 roads. They are called 'Xe-om' drivers and they are used all over Vietnam for short rides (in taxi is not affordable). These guys will ask you 'do you want motorbike?' which actualy means whether you want a ride. If you decide to use one for a short ride, make sure that you discuss the price before-hand. If not pre-decided, some drivers can argue for a long time over price in Vietnamese. Usually, a 5 to 10 minutes ride (1-2 km)should cost 10,000 vnd (0.5 Us$) & a ride of 30 minutes (say 5 to 8 km) should cost you 30,000 vnd (1.5 Us$). Remember that as of May 2011, the petrol prices are around 23,000 vnd OR 1.1 Us$/liter so negotiate accordingly (1 bike runs around 25-35 km/liter). Many of these guys can speak broken English. Ask them to drive slow (in Vietnamese, 'Cham-Cham' & use it repeatedly till he starts driving slow) otherwise they do not mind attempting to beat a bullet-train. Wear helmet, which every XeOm driver has (spare one). If you use one repeatedly, they can also serve as your 'tour guide'. These guys are not government servents.
