The Governor General's official residence Jul 29, 2010
Since 1867, Rideau Hall has been the official residence and workplace of every Governor General of Canada. This is also the site where the Governor General honours Canadians, hosts foreign dignitaries and where Heads of State and royalty stay when visiting Ottawa. It is open to the public for free tours, however, only five of the rooms are included in the tour, and photos are prohibited. The tour lasts about 45 minutes, and is available year-round, with more tours offered per day in the summer than at any other time of the year. There are also tours of the grounds offered, but we toured around the grounds on our own. The grounds are open daily from 8AM to one hour before sunset. From the outside, the house looks lovely. The inside is an acquired taste. It is quite extravagant, and a bit tacky for my liking. However, it was a great tour. Our tour guide was good, and we learned a lot about the Governor General, her job, and the residence. The grounds that surround the residence are amazing! It is huge, and so green and lush. The ceremonial trees planted by people such as Nelson Mandela, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and JFK is a fun experience, trying to find all the trees and reading who planted each one. We were almost more interested in that then anything else. Also, there is a changing of the guard, which happens every hour. In all, our Rideau Hall experience was great, and I would highly recommend visiting it.

Rideau Hall is the official residence of the Governor General and is located in the middle of an amazing lot. In the off-season, tours are only offered on weekends except for school groups, so when I went, we couldn't go inside the house. But a walk around the grounds is just as great. On a beautiful day, it's a walk in a gorgeous park. You can also see the trees planted by various royalty and high class celebrities on their visits to Rideau Hall, such as Queen Elizabeth.

The residence is also located across the street from the residence of the Prime Minister.
