Richmond Race Course
Richmond Race Course Reviews
brilliant windswept wide open space Apr 14, 2009
High above Richmond is the Race Course, no longer used for racing, it's a great place to come walking, flight a kite or look at the views down Swaledale, over the Vale of York towards the Cleveland Hills and as far as Teeside in the distance.
Recently the towns fireworks display has moved to this venue and there is a annual kite festival in the summer.
There was racing here until the end of the 19th century when it was discontinued because the horses became too fast for the relatively small and uneven course. John Carr of York designed the now ruined grandstand.
Watch out for horses as this is still used as an exercise ground and they fly past at some speed!
