Pitching a tent underground Mar 23, 2008
Where else do they have holes in the ground, made solely for the purpose of camping?
The best thing about being underground is that the temperature is a constant 24 degrees. And there are no flies, which seems like the highest luxury of them all after some time spent in outback Australia.
There are separate chambers in the dug-out, each big enough for a tent, while the three walls offer a lot more privacy than a normal outdoor campground. The holes in the roof makes it nice and light during the day, but the gravel is a bit hard to sleep on if you only have a thin sleeping mat.You don't really need a tent underground, but it's cooler to say that you've slept in a tent underground, than just underground.
The air is very dry, and somewhat dusty in the dugout, but the cool makes it a lot better than the air above ground in coober pedy.
Riba's Underground camping offer the only free showers in Coober Pedy, but you should keep your showers very short. Just don't expect much hot water the first five minutes...
All in all, it was an experience of a lifetime, and i highly recommend it to anyone, instead of sweating like crazy in a tent overground.
