Riad Rcif Fez Reviews
Beautiful Riad Apr 16, 2014
This is a beautiful Riad which is originally made to be a museum and the details up to the very corner of the Riad is impressive.
The Riad owner and his family are very hands on and they take care of their guests very well. I received email with instructions on how to get to Riad. However, there's also instruction to call a number upon arrival and when I called it, I got to speak with Hisham who is the owner. Immediately he wanted to know where I am and once I told him, he wanted us to park our car so he could come to us.
There was a man who is trying to guide us and he immediately told us to lose the guide as he will extort money from us. So we parked at a gasoline station to wait for Hisham. There are other people who tried to talk with us but when Hisham arrived in his sparkling new Mercedes car, they left immediately.
Hisham tried to establish we are the one speaking with each other and called my number so we both know for sure. He then asked me if I could ride in his car and Kanak and Hali could follow us.
He led us to park near his Riad. Kanak and Hali arent booked in RCIF but nearby so once he parked, he asked a porter to carry all our luggages. I was dropped first by the porter and Hisham carried both my luggages. At some point I feel shy for him to carry both my luggage so I asked to carry one and he handed me one.
Every turn in the street is well marked with a sign on where to turn towards Riad RCIF so it is easy to get to his Riad. I teased Hisham that it must be his exposure to Swiss ways (where he studied) that made him all these signs which is unusual and might be the only kind in Morocco.
Although, the Riad has many signs that ensures you get there, the way is through small alleys which dont have much people other than a few men. I think this may not be suitable for a lone lady traveler esp if she will need to arrive night time.
Hisham speaks 7 languages fluently and talk with the guests in their local language as much as possible. Impressive.
I was given tea and some pastry as a welcome treat. Then, I was shown my room which is a solo room. It was on the top floor so a bit tiring and i was struggling a bit bec I was tired from the long drive :P The staff, Lahsan, who is leading the way offered his hand so I gave mine to assist me going up. Then he hold my hand and caressed it. That and the way he looks at me was weird but I ignored it.
Im impressed by the details of carved wood and there was also a phonograph in my room and I find that cool. There's TV with cable. What is odd is that cable in Morocco has several porn channels! And I thought this is a conservative country...I guess only in appearance :P
The bathroom is nice and has tub :) There are some toiletries too. I had a good shower before dinner.
3 of us (with Kanak and Hali) had dinner on my first night in my Riad. The food is good. I ate Kanak's food bec I made a mistake of ordering pastille which I am not fond of because the sweetness taste peculiar for me. Kanak and I shared wine and it is a good wine. I had trouble finishing my last glass. Im such a weak drinker :P After Kanak and Hali paid their dinner, they were given small tagine pot. Then I was told by Hisham's brother, Saleem, that I'll get mine later. :)
Breakfast is served at the ground floor and it was a lot of bread with crepe and more. Several spreads. Very filling and good. The owner has been chatting with me during breakfast and showed me the video of how his riad was made. Then, he brought me up to the terrace and pointed to me places of interest. There is a turtle there and it bit me! LoL Naughty turtle.
Hisham asked me what my shoe size is. Then he guessed, 37? I was surprised and asked him how he know? Then he invited me downstairs for a surprise. He gave me brand new Moroccan slippers that matches the color of my top! Awesome!
I waited for Kanak and Hali so we could all go for a tour around. Then, Hisham called and wanted us to wait for him. Then, he drove us around. He brought us first to the top of a hill to have a nice view of Fez. Pretty cool. Then he brought us to ceramic coop. Then, to a carpet shop because Kanak is interested to see some. He also brought me to an argan oil shop to check out some argan. Then, he ask a guide to show us the tannery. After that, we were shown another shop with shawls. We didnt buy anything as it seem everything is expensive for our liking. We felt hungry and cut the tour short and went back to Kanak's Riad.
I came back late night around midnight because we (kanak, hali and i) went to watch a music festival called Soufi. Lahsan came to open the gate for me. Then he followed me upstairs. He asked to open my bedroom door for me and he let himself in. Then he started closing the windows of my room. I just stand near my doorway as I dont feel comfortable him being inside my room late night with no one else around. probably bec of the weird touch he gave me on first meeting him. Then, he switched on my TV and put it on porn. I said no and I said I will do it. He flicked again and then put it in a different porn channel. I said no again and took the remote from him. He was talking with me while moving towards the door and stood there. But I didnt look at him and was saying Thanks so he would leave. After some time, finally he left. i immediately locked my door.
I was considering whether to report him to Hisham. He makes me feel uncomfortable and I don't like that. I told kanak about it and he said I should just ignore the guy so i didnt report Lahsan.
On my 3rd day, I asked to move to a bigger room on 2nd floor and it is soo nice. Different and lovely in its own way. The TV is noticeably smaller but I wasnt there to watch any TV so I dont really care :P
Lahsan keeps on talking to me saying he will be sad when I leave the next day and ask me to have picture with him. I keep pretending I dont understand his english as he doesnt speak english well. He has been doing this until I had my lunch in the courtyard. He also tried to tell me something about just between me and him and without Hisham. I just keep making face like I dont understand. At one point, Hisham's mother scalled Lahsan from upstairs and seem to have told him off. I felt less harrassed after that.
I arrived late again that night but since I'm leaving early, Saleem had to be woken up to accept my payment. Saleem gave me half price for not eating my pastille the night I dined there. He also gave me half price for my lunch which makes one of my meal free. He gave me my free tagine pot too and told me that i'll have breakfast to go in the morning. Before I went up, Lahsan asked if I have bottled water. I said I still have.
Early morning, Lahsan handed me my takeaway breakfast and accompanied me out with my luggage.
I was running late so we called Hisham for a van which costed 2,000 MAD from Fes to Casablanca. Expensive but it's my only way to catch my flight which I did :)
