Affordable, quiet, wonderful experience from a Riad Sep 26, 2010
Riad Karmanda was a great find and I am glad I chose this as our place to stay while in Marrakech. It is about a 10 -15 minute walk from the Square. The riad itself was so quiet it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. Although we did not choose to secure a ride from the airport to the riad, they do offer the service for approx. $20 US. You can find a great description of what a riad is at http://www.riadsmorocco.com/what-is-a-ryad.html

Upon arriving I unpacked, took a shower then headed out to take pictures of the place. Inside on the lower level is the courtyard that includes a quaint eating area where they serve mint tea, breakfast and dinner. There is also a small reading area and a wading pool.

Upstairs is where all of the sleeping rooms are located. There are 6 themed rooms: Ambre, Berbere, Ebene, Majorelle, Marrakech, and Rose des Sables. The latter was my room choice. (Note-not all of the rooms have a "door" separating the bathroom from the sleeping area. Some have curtains, some have nothing.)

Couple of other items worth mentioning...the doors to the rooms do not lock with a key. They lock with a simple slider lock. If you have items that need locked up, the room is equipped with a safe. Also, since the riad is open 24/7, the door to enter the riad itself is always locked so you have to knock on the door to enter. If you are out in the wee hours of the morning, they will get up and let you in!

Room prices vary depending on the room chosen, the number of beds, the number of people and the season (hi or lo). Prices range from approximately $70 to $140 a night. Sometimes they run discounts and you can save a nice percentage off the regular price! You can also rent the entire riad, as it will accommodate up to around 14 people comfortably.

Outside there is a great roof terrace with chaise lounges, although the view is nothing to write home about. They also have a massage room and offer hamman services (spa). The manager Ahmed was easy to work with. Matter of fact we exchanged quite a few emails before I arrived. He is very knowledgeable and willing and ready to provide information about things to do and sites to see while in Marrakech. I will definitely stay again when I return!!
