Fell in love with the parks in Beijing Dec 13, 2009
The first park I saw in Beijing, on my very first travel over there, was Retan Park. I must have visited that park over 50 times by now, but still I remember my first steps there. When you walk into a Chinese park for the first time, after just having arrived, it is sort of an attack on all your senses. It looks different, smells different. You hear all sorts of noises you never heard before.

Today all the sounds and smells blend for me perfectly with that one aspect that I find so refreshing about those parks. You can do anything there, and no one will pay any attention. If I go to a park in Holland and do Tai Chi it usually raises a crowd and sometimes even an eyebrow... but in Chinese parks you can do almost anything. Total freedom. I find it one of the most refreshing experiences on all my travels.
