Restoran Jaring: Affordable and fresh Malay Cuisine Apr 20, 2012
There is a saying... "You know it's good when locals flock a certain place for meals". Although the opening hours are on weekdays from 7am to 7.30pm, however, most of the time they run out of food even before 3pm. Can one imagine how well business must have been to be able to afford to close on weekends as well ? Anyhow, my family and I dine here regularly to satisfy our cravings for Northern Malay food.

Northern Malay cuisine from Kelantan and Terengganu, north-east coast of Peninsula Malaysia has characteristic influences of Southern Thailand being somewhat a little sweeter and a little spicier but less sour-ish compared to central Thai cuisine. I simply love the range of kerabu (salad) offered at Restoran Jaring. They have at least 2 varieties of mango kerabu - with or without fish as well as other meat or seafood based kerabu which I equally adore.

Other must try dishes are ayam percik (grilled marinated chicken) and keli bakar (grilled catfish). Pair these two grilled dishes with a special spicy orangey coloured coconut based gravy to achieve full culinary enjoyment.

Another best seller at Restoran Jaring is their famous Sup Gearbox (Ox Bone Soup). Straw is conveniently provided to suck out those succulent bone marrow. The soup is light and aromatically flavored with spices such as black peppercorn, cinnamon, onion, star-anise, cardamon, cloves and etc making it ever so hearty.

Restoran Jaring is located on a two-storey building where the ground floor is without air-conditioning while the first floor is with air-conditioning. Pricing is average with dishes costing around RM5 per serving and ox bone soup costs about RM28 enough for 2-3 person. Oh yes, almost forget to mention, this is a partially self-service restaurant where customer pick up their own favorite dishes on buffett style counter top. Meanwhile, waiter will approach customer for ordering of drinks and soupy dishes.
