Restoran Green View: Unbeatable Consistency for Fresh Water Prawn Noodle Sep 08, 2013
If you are staying around the Federal territory in Malaysia, there is a worthwhile restaurant popular for fresh water prawn noodle (Sang Har Mee) not to be missed. Basically, fresh water prawn noodle is a gravy type of noodle with large fresh water prawns usually sliced in half on a bed of crispy fried egg noodles. Main ingredients in gravy consist of prawn stock, prawn roe and beaten eggs. Triple threat that when in combination produces some of most flavourful gravy but regretfully not too healthy for the heart. Aromatics used in this dish are spring onions, ginger slices and black pepper.
Sang Har Mee is created by adapting Cantonese style cooking technique to the Malaysian Chinese palate. In Southern China, usually pork or beef are stir-fried with flat rice noodles. As Malaysia is surrounded by ocean, nutrient rich mangroves serve as excellent breeding grounds for cultivations of large tiger prawns. The thriving aquaculture industry probably gave rise to the creation of this dish due to constant availability of fresh ingredients and the escalation of demand for something different.
There are at least 3 distinct textures that we locals look for when sampling this dish; the tenderness of the succulent fresh water prawn, the right amount of fluidity plus seasoning of the gravy and not forgetting the crispiness of the fried egg noodles. The freshness of ingredients used and the consistency in the gravy produced always have customers coming back for more.
Apart from their many fresh and delicious seafood dishes, Restoran Green View is a place where many business associates frequents as the quality of food never disappoints. There is a rumor that an infamous local political leader embroiled in a scandal in year 2008 enjoy having lunch here. Perhaps it'll be one's lucky day to bump into him. Just because he committed an offense does not necessarily translate into him lacking in good taste. In fact, I personally know of someone who went out of his way to impress his future father in law by bringing the family to dine here. After that, it seems that the proposal went on smoothly and they were happily married ever since... maybe there is some magical truth to the saying that food brings people together... :P
