A Day at the Zoo Oct 26, 2015
The Reston Zoo really isn’t in Reston, nor is it much of a zoo. But having driven past it many a times, I was inspired by the zoo reviews of fellow TravBuddy WalterC to finally pull over and check out whatever critters were roaming inside. It’s a small place in the Virginia suburbs outside Washington, D.C., surrounded by neighborhood houses whose residents probably love the smell of animal dung wafting in the air. Must do wonders for local property values.

There are a pair of camels in a pen, an exotic and noisy bird aviary, a very small reptile house with a few snakes and frogs, a family of kangaroos jumping about in another section, some monkeys in a large cage and a bunch of goats and pigs and turkeys in a barn you can pet. They sell containers of food pellets to feed the animals, but the rather high $12.95 admission fee was enough for me (though I do realize it costs money to care for all the species). Included in the admission price is a tractor ride through the Zoofari, a small enclosed stretch of land with some emus, zebras, pigs and huge cow things laying about. The driver stopped a couple of times to explain the critters, some of whom wandered over looking for handouts. Not exactly the wilds of Tanzania.

The whole things struck me as more of a cheesy roadside attraction than an actual zoo, yet it was entertaining for an hour or so. Kids will love this place and it was decorated up for Halloween. Most of the animals seemed content though a few appeared quite lonely. The Washington Post recently reported on the lack of oversight for American zoos and cited complaints about this one, but the owners vigorously denied the allegations. The Reston Zoo goes into hibernation in November and reopens in March with the warmer weather. If you find zoos objectionable, skip this place. If you do go, don’t expect anything like the San Diego Zoo. This is small time and doesn’t pretend to be anything else, but still a bit of fun all the same.
