Services couldn’t live up to the excellent food Jun 04, 2017
Kokkeriet is located in the middle of Copenhagen a short walk from Kongens Nytorv and close to the Amalienborg Castle. The restaurant is focused on high end dining with a focus on the Nordic cooking and it has been listed with a star in the Michelin guide for a few years. They mainly focus on two different fixed menus a large and a very but you can order individual dishes as well if you would prefer. I figure most people will go for the menus. The restaurant has different specials during the week and since we come on a Tuesday we can get an upgrade of the small menu (only about nine dishes) so we got four extra dishes which the kitchen was testing for the moment considering putting them on the menu in the future.

We come to the restaurant and are taken to the table in a corner. It is pretty warm inside the restaurant since spring has actually arrived in Copenhagen with temperatures in the 20s. Unfortunately the staff lets us wait for about ten minutes before anybody arrives asking us for drinks orders or explaining anything about the menu. Not quite what you expect at a place like this. Finally the drinks arrive and we can start on the predinner snacks.

We start with a ferment onion followed by some ox bone marrow which was both great little bites. The bone marrow is followed by a chicken salad which is served inside an egg the taste doesn’t quite live up to the first two snacks but a least I manage to get the salad out of the eggshell without destroying it. After the eggshell we get a fine looking potato dish with a bit of a taster inside. The last of the snack is a waldorf salad which isn’t really served as a salad but as a drink with the traditional ingredients from the salad. The snacks were generally great but they did take a while to arrive at the table so we were getting hungry by now.

The first dish finally arrives – it is one of the test dishes not found on the traditional menu. It is a small tarte with cheese and it is a nice start of the meal – it actually feels a bit like a continuation of the snack part of the menu and not so much a beginning of the main menu. The tarte is followed by a crab and cabbage dish which is also fairly small. This is unfortunate since the dinner has gone on for about two hours now and we are getting a bit hungry. Finally the bread arrives with the thirds dish so we can do something about the hunger.

The dinner continues with several great dishes – but unfortunately the pace is slow through the entire meal so when they finally reach the dessert part of the meal and ask if we would like cheese it is almost midnight so we decide to skip the cheese and when we finally finish the last desert at 12.30 it has gotten too late for coffee and an avec. So we just go home.

The food which was on the actual menu was great – we got four test dishes of which the two first were good and may have a change of making it to the actual menu while the last two test dishes are unlike to make it to the menu in their current form. The experience at the restaurant took 5½ hours which was a bit to slow a pace for my taste – if the dinner had been over in 3½-4 hours I would have thought it was an excellent value for the meal and great experience. So do go here for the food but come early since you will have to be there for the long haul.
