Restaurant Japanese Pancake World Amsterdam Reviews
Delicious Okonomiyaki in Amsterdam Oct 17, 2009
I have always loved Japanese food and that's not simply due to my fascination with the country itself. Amsterdam is a city that changes alot, with startup restaurants popping out of the ground faster than you can buy your first joint.
As such it's good practice to search for new restaurants whenever you can.
Five years ago, I discovered the Japanese Pancake World (Further refered to as:JPW)only one of two restaurants in Europe (Another being in London) that specialises in the Japanese dish known as Okonomiyaki, that's mostly referred to in the west as "Japanese pancakes"
The word Okonomiyaki means 'cook as you like' which also explains the accommodating nature of these pancakes: just choose your favourite toppings and indulge yourself in your personalised pancake, Japanese-style.
For those that have travelled to Japan; do not think this is the same Okonomiyaki found in Tokyo. For one the Okonomiyaki here are bigger than their Tokyo counterparts and also you aren't required to cook them yourself. Instead the wonderfull and always cheerfull chef Joachim will take that task upon himself. He has an amazing menu of preset Okonomiyaki, but as the name suggests he can alter it to your wishes.
When making a reservation, do take one of the 6 seats at the Tepan Yaki table ! The chef has many stories to tell.
The chef offers 3 distinct styles of Okonomiyaki, you can think of them as the bottom of the pizza. The Negi Yaki, Hiroshima and the most popular being the Osaka.
For the sake of keeping this review short, if your interested about the 3 styles please read up the extensive description on their website.
The food is really great at JPW, the meat is well selected and nice and soft.
The seasoning of sachimi, "gember" and "dancing fishflakes" along with the stylish white stripes of Mayonaise definitly hit it as far as presentation goes.
Don't be in a hurry when eating here , like most Japanese restaurants especially those that use Tepan tables for the cooking it can be slower than your avarage dinner eat, but it's all the more worth it. So much attention goes in the preperation and you can really taste it.
The dishes are around 13 euro's, but the king of them all the Osaka deluxe will set you back 17 euro's as it's a mix of both seafood and regular meat .. I highly recommend it.
One Okonomiyaki looks deceptingly small, but if you've been watching the whole process you will know how much food is compressed in it and can easily fill you up for the rest of the evening ! All-time Japanese favorite beers, Asahi and Sapporo are also available as well as a nice little Japanese lemonade known as Calpis.
JPW delivers excellent food in a friendly boutique restaurant, for a great and affordable price. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
