Best Meal in all of Morocco Mar 17, 2013
Our Intrepid tour group visited Restaurant Dar Hatim at the recommendation of our tour guide. After walking through some narrow alleyways to get there, I wasn't sure what to expect when we got there. Once inside, I was very surprised to see an elaborately decorated restaurant on the ground floor of a family's home. Dinner started as is usual in Morocco, with some mint tea. After tea, we were brought out a plethora of small plates which was considered the "salad" such as beans, eggplants, and potatoes. This salad was a meal in itself and if salads were like this at home, i'd be a vegetarian! After the salad, we were brought a chicken pastilla which was a chicken filled pastry covered in cinnamon and almonds. It was a bit sweet for a main dish but delicious nonetheless. Finally, dessert was again the typical orange slices sprinkled with cinnamon. This was hands down the best meal we had during our time in Morocco and the meal that all other meals were compared to.

A little jewel in the medina Apr 26, 2011
Restaurant Dar Hatim is not a restaurant you will find in any guidebook. Information about this place goes from mouth to mouth. It is located in the Fés medina where a local family has turned three rooms on the ground floor of their home into a restaurant. The kitchen and the family room is on the first floor, but you can also dine on the roof top terrace.

The house dates back to the 9th century AD. The restaurant owner´s family has lived there for over 100 years. There´s a lot of history in those walls.

Restaurant Dar Hatim serves a set menu. It started with Moroccan salads, then a chicken pastilla and it ended with fresh fruit and mint tea. For Dh100 (€10) this was excellent value for money! The pastilla is a dish cooked with spices, herbs and chicken with pastry packed around it and topped with cinnamon and almonds. The pastilla was supposed to have been made with pigeon, but the owners wife (the cook) didn´t like it, so she made it with chicken instead. Because of the cinnamon and pastry it had a sweet flavor, which is unusual for a dinner dish, but it was surprisingly tasty and very filling. I did see some skewers at a table, so I guess there are other options if you definitely don´t want to try the pastilla. These people will do anything to make sure that you are enjoying a lovely meal.

With their specialty, the pastilla, they serve wine and beer.

After dinner we were taken on a tour of the house. It was amazing to see how small the kitchen was, knowing all the food they cooked in it. The owner´s wife, her mother in law and a third woman did all the cooking. What a job they do!

Besides the food, the service was excellent. The wife came down several times to make sure that her cooking was all right. It was with such love and care that this food was both cooked and served. I can highly recommend Restaurant Dar Hatim.
