Chateau Neercanne, Cannerweg 800, 6213 ND Maastricht
A terraced castle, located in the beautiful Jekerdal valley (on the Dutch-Belgium border).
Sitting at Chateau Neercanne’s terrace you are overlooking it’s gorgeous baroque gardens.
Chateau Neercanne is situated in the outskirts of Maastricht, only a 15- 20 minutes drive from the city centre.
We made reservations in advance, the host offered to have the aperitif at the terrace. So we did. The panoramic view was just beautiful. Great scenery.
We had a glass of wine and an ‘amuse’: St. Jacobs shell on crab.
Afterwards we had dinner inside; first tuna with lobster and then sweetbread.
First class dishes!
We had our coffee in a marl cave where the wine cellars are located too.
Mr. Dennis Lemmens (Maitre d’Hotel) was giving us explanations on all the inscriptions in the cellar. We thank him for that!
On 9 December 1991, Her Majesty Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands was a very special guest at Château Neercanne, holding a festive lunch for the government leaders of the member states of the European Union. Twelve European leaders met here and, after much debating, drafted a document called the 'Maastricht Treaty', and with it the European Union came into being. That evening, before they left, they each signed a plaque on the wall of the château's candlelit cellar.
We had the opportunity to see these signatures and inscriptions.
After this we briefly met Hans Snijders, Michelin star crowned chef.
