A week at Residencial Funchal Apr 18, 2017
I had been recommended Residencial Funchal by a friend who had stayed there. She had had a room on the third floor with a shared terrace, facing the market, but I got a room on the second floor without balcony (I knew that already when I booked the room) and it was facing the back of the building. Anyway, my room was good too. It was a convenient room with a comfortable bed, extra blanket, bedside table with reading lamp, a good sized table to put things on and plenty of hangers for the clothes. In the bathroom the shower had lots of warm water and there were soap and several towels. And the room was cleaned every day.

On the downside was that the lamp over the mirror in bathroom didn't work so light was weak, but I can live with that :) And if your neighbours are loud you will hear them. I had a noisy family next room one night, but luckily they went to bed early. Then, breakfast is not served at the hotel, but that is really not a problem as there are lots of cafes around the market. One cafe even opened up at 6am on Sundays.

The best thing with the hotel is the location, just behind the Mercado dos Lavradores, close to the centre, bus stops and the charming Zona Velha, where you will find lots of nice restaurants for dinner. Pau de Canela is a nearby café which is good for breakfast (it opens at 7am and is closed on Sundays).

And the price was good. I paid 110.25 Euro for seven nights (April 2017).

Cheap place to stay in the old town Jul 18, 2011
Residencial Funchal is located in the old town of Funchal. Everything is within the walking distance - bus stops, restaurants and bars, supermarket, harbour and so on.

I stayed there for 7 nights in a triple room. The room was basic but pleasant. There were three single beds, a desk, two chairs, a wardrobe and a tv. The bathroom was a bit small and the shower curtain was not any good but it was OK for the money we paid. We also had a balcony, which was great as we could relax there in the evening.

The staff were friendly but did not speak much English.

All in all, I quite enjoyed my stay in this hotel and will book it again if I ever go to Funchal again.
