republic is a beautiful, big but intimate, space in famous restaurant row on la cienega. with neighbors like bastide (and to a much lesser extent, koi), i had high expectations for the food.

my friend and i started off with a bottle of terrazas malbec, which was lovely, by the way. it still never ceases to amaze me though that restaurants could mark up the price of a malbec to an astonishing $48 per bottle - considering that malbec's are dirt cheap in argentina. the server was kind enough to educate us in saying that the US imposes huge tarrifs on imports. while this might be true, a mark up this high, even with tarrifs taken into account, is still highway robbery!

our amuse bouche was interesting and surprisingly simple. i was initially taken aback but it turned out quite tasty = a ritz cracker topped with grilled pineapple and a slice of brie. the saltiness and sweetness was a great combination.

the bread offered was a cornbread with jalapeno - nice spiciness but did not overpower the moistness of the cornbread. there were also bite-sized buiscuits that were quite buttery.

we shared an heirloom tomato and burrata salad. i loved the burrata and the tomato was quite fresh and sweet although i thought that serving them chopped was not as effective as serving them sliced (as in at osteria mozza). the effect was that the tomatoes were a tad (just a tad) mushy than i wanted it to be. overall, i did enjoy this dish.

i then had an osso bucco, which was served lukewarm. i thought it was ok, the meat did not fall off the bone although it was somewhat tender.

my friend had some steak, which i did not try. she said it was ok.

we shared a smoked mac n cheese. this would have been fantastic if it was served piping hot. unfortunately, it was served lukewarm.

the service was lovely though.

overall, if you want the ambience but are not that into food, then republic is perfect for you. good for groups, girls' night outs and dates.
