Okay for a night Sep 02, 2014
Once again, we did not booked hotel when we head to this country since we still think it is easy to find a hotel to stay depending of the price we want to pay. The first place we saw near the bus station was fully booked and then we walked inside the old town and basically just knocking the door when there were sign for apartment or room to rent. There were a couple of available rooms inside the old town – however one was not en-suite which is not suitable for us and the other room was a bit strange – just a made up sofa to become a bed with en-suite room which also not suitable for us. We found one apartment but a bit costly for what we want to pay. Finally, we agree to find a restaurant with free internet access, having lunch and search for the hotel.

Once we booked the hotel, we asked the hotel staff for direction toward the hotel since we do not have the old town map handy and we were somewhere deep in the old town after walk randomly. It appears our hotel was very closed by from the restaurant we had lunch, just next corner basically and it less than one minutes’ walk.

The hotel has an attractive outdoor restaurant in front of it with a really good food. I have booked a room with breakfast and dinner for the price of €70 per night for two people. I expect the dinner would be included in our stay and we might get lucky with 3 course meals for the price of €10 per person for dinner. Unfortunately it was not the case. When we had dinner there, they gives us the restaurant menu and we just choose what we like and then we have to pay the rest of the price if it is more than €10 (which already pre-paid when booked the room). In addition to this, supposedly the hotel guests has 10% discount to have dinner at the restaurant, but this was not the case. The restaurant did not honour the 10% discount and we have to pay full price of the dinner minus the €20 we pay for 2 people. We asked about the discount, and after a bit of argument and disagreement, finally the restaurant deducted the total cost of our dinner. We were not too happy about this since it seems like they just want people to eat at their restaurant and nothing special about dinner included in the room rate.

Anyway, our room was on the small size, only 16sqmm with one double bed and a couple of windows facing the old town but not much view since one windows face the other building opposite the hotel. There were one desk and chair and a couple of small stool (like night dresser) under the table which we use to store our belonging. The building and the furniture were old and the wall were very thin, we could hear next door neighbour talking or having shower. Luckily we were busy exploring the old town so did not spend much time in the room except for sleep only.

The next day, we had breakfast in the hotel restaurant and breakfast was quite good and large in quantity.

Decent food Sep 02, 2014
We had pre booked dinner at the hotel since we thought we were getting a great deal when we arrived paying 10 Euros for dinner. A couple of years ago we had gotten a similar offer at another hotel in Slovenia which was a great deal and we assumed this would be good value as well. Unfortunately it turned out not to be the case so do not book the prepaid dinner if you stay at the hotel just buy what you like from the extensive menu.

It turned out we didn’t actually get dinner for ten Euros but were only allowed to get a discount of 10 Euros on the total bill of our dinner. So there really wasn’t much of a discount for us when the bill came they hadn’t even taken off the costmary ten percent discount for hotel guest so we had to complain about this which took a while before they recognized the discount should be on the full amount including the prepaid part of the meal.

The location of the restaurant is pretty good - they have indoor dinning but considering the temperature outside not many people used the inside dining room instead everybody sat outside on a small square where the restaurant had put up a lot of tables and covers so you could sit outside even if it rained. The square is pretty small but still bigger than many other places in the small streets of the old town so they have managed to put quite a few tables in at the outside dining area of the restaurant. When you eat you can have a look at what is going on at the square - which isn’t all that much but you can sit and enjoy the night air and have a look at the old classic buildings around the square while you are eating your dinner.

The menu is a pretty standard fare for the western Balkan area and most of what is on the menu you can find in other cities along the Adriatic coast. Fortunately the cooks seem to be better at their job than the people doing the calculation of the bills so the food we got was pretty good. We had soup for starter which was good and well suited for this semi warm night before we continued to the main with a pasta dish and a steak. The food was well prepared and arrived fairly quickly.

In addition to the dinner we had also prebooked breakfast at the restaurant. This turned out to be much better value than the not so attractive dinner deal we had the night before. We could order one drink and one dish from the breakfast menu which actually involved a significant discount compared to the original menu price. If you stay at the hotel it is definitely worth booking the breakfast in advance and even if you stay in one of the nearby accommodations without breakfast you could go here and enjoy a good breakfast to start the day before you head out and explore the small town or the area around the Bay of Kotor.

Small hotel in the old town Sep 02, 2014
The hotel is located in the old part of Kotor down at the Bay of Kotor. The location insures you will be really close to everything inside the old town since the old town of Kotor is really tiny. The hotel has a great location at a small square which is used by the hotel restaurant out in front of the hotel. The restaurant seems to be the main focus of the hotel and the whole concept of renting out rooms appears to be more of something they do to supplement the income from the restaurant.

The entrance bar and restaurant is well on the square and if you want to go to the actual bar you just go from the restaurant on the square in through the door to the bar. The entrance to the hotel on the other hand is in a small side street from the square in front - there is a small reception but it is only occasionally manned so you might have to ask for a receptionist inside the restaurant or bar.

We get the key in the reception and then walk up the narrow stair to our room on the third floor - it is a pretty old building so obviously there is no elevator in the building. The room is pretty small but it has got what you need from a hotel room. There is a bed which is fairly comfortable - in addition there is a television, a table under which you can store some minor bags and there is a chair. There are a window facing the nearby street and you can see a little bit of the old town but the view from the room is hardly stunning so you probably won’t be too distracted by the view to actually go out and explore the old town.

There is a food option at the hotel - you can get breakfast for two fro 5 € and dinner for 10 € each. The breakfast is a pretty good deal since it gives you both a food item and a drink cheaper than what you could buy it for in the restaurant. The dinner option on the other hand is not good value and you are better off just ordering from the menu in the restaurant. The dinner option is actually you have to order from the menu and then just get a discount of 10 € when the bill comes. So in fact you will be better off just ordering from the menu and then pay what you have - indeed there is no discount given if you buy the dinner option. The restaurant is actually quite ok so you can eat there if you want to go for the lazy option of eating close to home so you just have to make your way up the stairs if you have had a good dinner and a couple of beers or wines.

The official check out time is at 11 but we told the receptionist in the morning, that we intended to walk up the hill to the fortress on top of the city so we might get delayed and they were pretty flexible saying it was ok if we checked out a bit later like at 12 or 13.

I like it how you turn the "hardly stunning" view into an advantage, that it will not keep you in your room instead of exploring the old town. Positive attitude :D

good food bad service Sep 02, 2014
We booked and paid the dinner when we booked the hotel directly from booking.com. We thought the dinner would be part of the hotel bargain (like the one we had in other country) since it was very cheap, cost €20 for two people without drink. But the website did not mention what kind of food would serve or what kind of dinner we would get.

When we check in, the hotel staff mention that we will have dinner at the hotel restaurant which located just outside the hotel. He also mention there were 10% discount of hotel guests at the restaurant.

Unfortunately it was not the case. When we had dinner at the hotel restaurant, the staff gives us the restaurant menu and we need to choose what we like to have for dinner and then we have to pay the rest of the price if it was more than €20 (which already pre-paid when booked the room). In addition to this, supposedly the hotel guests has 10% discount to have dinner at the restaurant, but this was not the case when we get the bill. The restaurant did not honour the 10% discount and we have to pay full price of the dinner minus the €20 we paid for two people. We asked about the discount, and after a bit of argument and disagreement, finally the restaurant deducted the total cost of our dinner. We were not too happy about this since it seems like they just want people to eat at their restaurant and nothing special about dinner included in the room rate.

Anyway, the dinner itself was good. I had seafood marinara and it was very delicious with real red wine and very tasty and plenty of seafood meat on it. There were slight different in price from the menu and the cashier bill which we enquire since it was €4 different for the seafood marinara. The money was not much, but we want to know why it was different with the menu price. By the time, the waiting staff was not happy with this and said the price was up but have not update it in their menu – which a bit suspicious to me, since this is hotel restaurant, if they update the price why not update the price in the menu as well or at least inform in advance when the guest order food.

Without those little incident, I would probably rate this place higher since the food quality and quantity was good and I would recommend this place to other. Unfortunately I was not sure now, so if you go and have something to eat at this place, beware and check your final bill.
