Renaissance Portsmouth Hotel & Waterfront Conference Center Reviews
Nice Waterfront Hotel Jun 13, 2015
The Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth, Virginia is located on the waterfront looking across the Elizabeth River to Norfolk, Virginia. The historic Old Towne area of Portsmouth dating to it's founding in 1752 is located right near the hotel in square mile section of streets with many restaurants, shops and historical sites. For sightseeing in Portsmouth this would definitely be the place to stay, though it not a budget hotel, though they do have reduced rate specials, so look for one of those for a more affordable rate if on a budget.
For a high end waterfront hotel the main tower of rooms isn't exactly architecturally inspired and is sort of boxy looking, but the outside grounds are nice and the interior has some nice touches to enjoy. The views from the upper floors are absolutely splendid with views of the Elizabeth River and the city of Norfolk on the other side of the river. There's a pier area nearby where you can take a paddle boat on a tour around the river area if you like what you see.
I was part of a wedding party here where the ceremony was held. I didn't stay overnight myself, but from what the other guests said who did stay here, the rooms were quite good and many of them had views of either the waterfront side or the Old Towne side. This due to the construction of the building so rooms face one way or the other. I did have occasion to engage the staff some and they were all very polite, professional, courteous and helpful.
The hotel itself was built in 2001 and there is quite a lot of history associated with the location, as you can imagine being located near the Old Towne dating from the mid 18th century. The long hallway leading into the main section of the hotel and reception area is lined with many vintage photos of times gone by that depict some history of the are. I found this sort of a nice touch and very interesting to look at the vintage photos, sort of like an art gallery of sorts.
