Luxury chic in Midtown NYC Jun 24, 2012
Located on 57th and Lexington Ave in Midtown, this hotel is always busy with activities and events on the second floor lounge with bar/cafe and restaurant. The check-in counter is on the ground floor and looked somewhat small with a very narrow hallway but second floor lounge had an ambiance of a nice lounge bar with lights dimmed a bit. When I was there, this area was busy with people dressed up for early evening events and parties and had the ambiance of being in a small bed and breakfast place where everybody seems to know everyone else with greetings being exchanged and names were being called as if the hotel is frequented by regulars.

I had a chance to engage the concierge staff to figure out a nice place to eat with some of my colleagues traveling together. On duty staff explained with great energy and enthusiasm and without any hesitation recommended some of the area restaurants to try out given the information that we like to take a walk to Central Park and find a place close to the park and also to the hotel. She also took out a map and marked the exact location of the restaurant and hotel and volunteered to call the restaurant to make the reservation for us for the time that we selected. Even though, when we actually got to the restaurant, the reservation wasn't found under any of the names, we had a great dining experience at the restaurant.

Hotel is clean and well organized with all the things that you might need when you are on a business trip but like many other hotels in NYC, the essential business tool, Internet connectivity was not provided for free but offered at extra cost. I was given a free bottle of wine and high quality cheese and crackers as a room service with a personal note from the manager, apologizing for the situation from the previous night when I was sent to another hotel for a night. Even though it was a small thing, I think it was a nice gesture. Most likely I will stay at this hotel again despite the initial disappointment of getting bumped. The hotel also made an arrangement for me to stay at the hotel for free, helping me to forget quickly about the initial negative impression. Sometimes, this is what separates high quality service from the rest, seeing customers as long term relationships that need to be nurtured, despite any short terms financial losses. Service industry is built on reputations and it is unfortunate that many hospitality businesses seem to have forgotten this.

A hotel closer to Time Square might be a better option for the tourist.
