Hotel Relais Vaticano
First the positive: This hotel is very close to the Lepanto metro station, about a 10-minute walk from St. Peter’s Basilica, in a very convenient, quiet area about 15 minutes from Piazza del Popolo.
The staff we came in contact with was friendly – the receptionist at check-in was really nice, showed us to our room and gave us good instructions about how to get around. The lady responsible for breakfast in the morning was also friendly. Both check-in and check-out went smoothly.
To access the rooms, we had to exit the hotel through the front door and walk down a side street and enter the building again through another entrance. Then we walked up a couple flights of stairs to reach the door to the “rest of the hotel” which consisted of a number of guest rooms and a breakfast room. I think that the connection between the reception area and the hotel itself is being worked on.
The best word to describe the room is “improvised” – it looked like they had taken a large flat and converted it into 5 or 6 hotel rooms as cheaply as possible. The “king sized” bed was actually two beds pushed against each other and covered with one sheet (so, if you are in the middle, the beds push apart and you end up in a rut!) The TV only receives Italian TV stations. The minibar is a little refrigerator on the floor by the door... The blanket was made of polyester or some other synthetic fiber and had stains on it. An extra blanket was rolled up in a ball on the closet floor (did NOT want to investigate that!) This wins the award for “most uncomfortable bed”!
The worst part of the room was the tiny bathroom – the shower is the smallest I’ve ever seen – about 2 ft square, and had an extremely slow drain so you have to stop the water to let it drain and avoid spilling over onto the floor. The water heater hanging from the wall above the shower and toilet made some interesting noises (but worked just fine – although electrical wires over showers make me nervous!)... To allow the bathroom door to swing inwards the floor is split level and you really have to be careful when getting out of the shower to avoid losing your balance.
To top it off, it wasn’t clean (mold, mildew, old hairs, stains on the blankets, sticky floor, soap scum in the sink...)
Finally, breakfast wasn’t too good either. The coffee machine’s product sent me looking for the thermos with hot water and a teabag! There were hot drinks, orange juice, rolls, ham, cheese, mortadella, some stale cakes and store bought croissants individually wrapped in cellophane. There also was a chafing dish with scrambled eggs, but they were cold so I didn’t try them.
So, given the location, I guess they don’t need to do much to keep occupancy up to acceptable levels. Considering that it wasn’t at all cheap I felt ripped off. Even if it had been cheap I still would have felt ripped off. Next time I’m in Rome, I’ll stay somewhere else!
