The Region de Tambacounda is one of 11 regions in Senegal and lies on the eastern edge of the country. The region is further divided into 3 departments named Bakel, Kédougou and Tambacounda. The Region de Tambacounda is the largest of all regions, but is sparsely populated and its economy lags behind the rest of the country.

The economy of Tambacounda is mostly reliant on agricultural cash crops such as cotton and peanuts. In the southern part of the region around the city of Kedougou, mining also contributes to the economy. One of the region's most notable attractions is the Niokolo-Koba National Park, the largest nature reserve in western Africa, which supports the economy through tourism revenues and is a World Heritage site.

Niokolo-Koba National Park is a popular destination for tourists seeking to experience the landscape and wildlife habitat in the region. The Gambia River flows through the national park full of gallery forests and savannahs with rich fauna and is home to a variety of species such as elephants, lions, leopards, chimpanzees, baboons, Derby elands (largest of the antelopes) and hippopotamuses as well as many birds, reptiles and amphibians.
