The flight in to Punta Arenas was full (flight continued on to Ushuaia, Argentina with a bunch of Antarctic cruise passengers) and I was unable to talk myself into an "A" seat (left side window) for potential views of the Southern Patagonian Ice Fields.  So I wasn't disappointed when clouds obscured any view that might have been had from that side of the plane.  However those clouds and the strong winds made for one hell of a roller coaster ride for the final hour into Punta Arenas.…

My last day in Ushuaia (Saturday) I basically spent checking e-mail, updating this blog, downloading the data from my GPS travel recorder, getting very frustrated with the slow computers in internet cafes, and sending the now traditional New Year’s e-mail. The flight from Santiago was spectacular (see photos). We could see the snow capped mountains of the Andes and even glaciers! It certainly made the barron flat areas of Argentina on the other side of the mountains look boring. Punta Arenas is a small town (for Chile) of 120,000 people. With the biggest drawcard being the cementry (as listed by all the guide books).
