Refuge des Fondues Paris Reviews
Fun dining experience in Montmartre Dec 27, 2007
Picture a restaurant roughly the length of a small living room and the width of a large closet, with long tables lining the side walls set so closely together that you have to literally climb over them to get to the benches on the other side. The hosts will help you, and tease you mercilessly in French if you should act embarrassed, break a plate, or refuse...don't be offended though, it's all in good fun.
You sit against walls covered in scrawls and carvings like "MM was here 2004" and "I love RdF!" and "U of I 1999!"...the remnants of former patrons wishing to leave their marks. The host will ask if you'd like meat or cheese--either is a good option, and if you want you can do both. The cheese option means you'll recieve a large fondu pot with melted cheese and a basket of bread to dip. You'll also be served a plate of "hors d'oeuvres" (pickles, sausage, cheese) and a glass of kir. The meat entree comes with two kinds of meat and a tray of sauces..and of course a fondu pot for cooking the meat. Answer "red" or "white" according to your wine preference, and receive not a glass, but a baby bottle filled to the brim with your choice!
Hang out and make friends with fellow diners (you'll be crammed right next to them) and with the hosts...they've worked there forever, and are brusque but funny.
Not too expensive, but it's cash only, so be prepared! When I lived in Paris I took my visitors here for a treat...it's lots of fun!
