In the mid 1800s Thomas Reed settled here and began growing wheat for the many miners who were here to find gold. He donated a small piece of land for a railroad station and in return the railroad officials named the area after him. Later, when mining dropped off and the demand for wheat faded other vine fruit, trees and crops were planted. With water from the Kings river and the railroad the area flourished. Today the community is about 25,000 population and has been dubbed the “Worlds Fruit Basket”.
