Red Fish Blue Fish Victoria Reviews
Best fresh fish in town Jul 13, 2011
This little funky outdoor restaurant is called Red fish Blue fish it serves only sustainable seafood and does so with as little waste as possible.
Partners Simon Sobolewski, Kunal Ghose and Barbara Houston started this business in 2007.
They wanted to be green, they wanted to be sustainable, and they wanted to be ecologically responsible. The first step to their adventure was recycling an old cargo container and turning it into the fish and chip stand, which sits on the dock in Victoria Harbour. No new material was used, or wasted, in the building process.
The container has a "green" roof with plants and soil acting as insulation, cooling the container in the summer and keeping in the heat during the winter.
Next came composting. The restaurant works with a composting company to turn all food scraps and the restaurants cardboard food containers and wooden cutlery into compost that is provided by local organic farmers. To complete the circle Red fish blue fish then buys the produce it needs from the farmers.
Even the canola oil, once it is no longer useable, is turned into fuel for the companys 1979 car and other oil is donated to an artists cooperative for fuel.
The result is less than half a bag of garbage per day.
But the biggest draw is the seafood. They buy only sustainable seafood, following the Vancouver Aquariums Ocean wise program.
That means buying seafood that is caught in a way that ensures the long term health and stability of the species, as well as the greater marine ecosystem.
The menu changes with the seasons this all depends on or if an ocean wise alert recommends against a particular species-they offer halibut, tuna, chum salmon, Ling cod all of which are caught individually rather than nets that will scoop up unwanted or out of season products.
The oysters and scallops on the menu are farm raised.
The taste really is divine!!! Yes!!! I had some halibut!!!!!
Okay done with the history...time for some eating.
I love this little place...and there is always a long line up no matter when you go...rain or shine...it's busy.
I first went there with Linda (a friend from Banff)...and the lady ahead of us in the line up heard us chatting about trying to guess how good the food was.
She turned back and said...it is the bestest of the bestest...so I was ready to dig in.
I also came here with Wayne from Travbuddy...the food was awesome....both times!!!
The food is fresh...and it's good.
I have since then recommended it to a few people who have asked me coming into the bus depot...
Where is a good place to go have some fish.
I tell them Red fish, Blue fish...one lady came back into the depot just to tell me how good it was.
It's just a great little funky cargo container...
You sit outside and watch the ships come in...your right on the dock...
A cup of good coffee some fish or whatever...some sun, heat, watch the sun go down....
what more could you ask for????
A little food heaven on earth!!!
