Tips for reaching Krabi from Bangkok by train! Nov 26, 2011
Krabi is not directly connected to any train lines, however the nearest train station to access Krabi will be Surat Thani, when traveling from Bangkok.
One of the comfortable ways to reach Krabi from Bangkok is traveling by the train to Surat Thani and then traveling by bus. Especially, if you enjoy train travel and don’t mind spending about 11hrs on the train, then take one of those express trains from Hua Lamphong station to Surat Thani station and take a bus from Surat Thani to Krabi town. The bus travel will be little over 3 hrs and it is scenic drive!
There are several express trains from Bangkok to Surat Thani running everyday, and if you prefer not to spend the day time on the train, then choose overnight sleeper trains that conveniently arrive early in the morning at Surat Thani. Mostly, all the trains have sleepers (AC/Non AC) and some trains with private sleepers, which are AC 1st class.
1st class sleepers are the best if you need complete privacy. Trains with 1st class cabins have one lower and one upper berth with windows and a lockable sliding door. Solo travelers have to either pay for the additional sleeper or share with another person. An attendant will provide clean sheets, pillow and a blanket and will make the bed in the night.
There are couple of overnight express trains (number. 83 and 85) which may work very well if you wanted to travel by 1st class sleeper. These trains leave Bangkok at 5:05pm and 7:30pm and arrive Surat Thani at about 4:30am and 7:30am respectively.
You can reserve train tickets online at http://www.thairailticket.com/esrt/Default.aspx?language=1 or through travel agents or by visiting railway booking counters. For online confirmed booking, just print the eTicket and board the train.
It is also possible to buy tickets for the bus segment before boarding the train, but it is not really necessary. If you have already paid for the bus to Krabi town, then look for signs for the connection or someone there will assist on the transfer at Surat Thani station. Both government and private bus services operate from Surat Thani station, however government bus fares are cheaper.
If you choose to travel on a private bus then you will need to contact the travel agencies just outside the station and they will make arrangements to transfer to the private bus terminus from where you will be boarding the bus to Krabi town.
From Krabi town bus stop you can hire a tuk tuk or taxi to your hotel in the town or to other nearby destinations such as Ao Nang beach.
