Wondrous scenery Jun 28, 1997
Unlike the Flåmbana (review) this is not a private railway but a branch line on the main Norwegian rail network. I should find it difficult to say which I like best. This is far longer but its scenic treats are found on the line between the bottom two stations, Bjorli and Åndalsnes. Here it drops over 1500 feet.

Åndalsnes is by no means the back of beyond. There are buses round the Moldefjord in each direction to Molde and Ålesund respectively and in summer it is possible to get a bus over the 'Golden Route' to Geiranger, a wonderful route with a high mountain pass and a car fery crossing thrown in.

Possibly the most spectcular sight from the railway is the Trollveggen, one of the highest vertical rock wals in Europe but the Kylling Bridge on the line itself is a worthy rival

Trollveggen is the highest vertical mountain wall in Europe . It is 5950 feet from the valley to the top of the wall. Out of this, 3300 feet are vertical together with a 150 feet overhang.

In 1980 a new sport appeared, base jumping. Between 1980-86 300-400 parachuters jumped off Trollveggen. As a result of several accidents and dangerous rescue missions, parachuting in Trollveggen was prohibited by law in 1986.
