Good food, even if you are not a local Feb 28, 2011
Ralph's Bar and Mary's Kitchen is a little bar just off highway 35 in Wisconsin, along the Great River Road. My friend and I were passing through town and noticed a bunch of cars parked outside, as well as several snowmobiles. Generally a restaurant has good food if there are lots of cars there, so we stopped.

We were having a late lunch and got there around 1:30 in the afternoon. Inside was packed! We slid into a booth and looked around. It was the typical Wisconsin bar - lots of people, men sitting on bar stools and a pool table. In addition, we noticed a bunch of older people, men and women. Since it was so busy, it took awhile for the bartender to notice us, but it wasn't long. We each ordered a cheeseburger and a beer - standard fare at a bar and grill. They even had sweet potato fries.

As we waited to order, we noticed a birthday cake on the pool table. We wondered if there was a private party going on, but we decided to stay because we didn't see any signs about it. People kept coming in and the bar was getting more crowded. Then I noticed the sign above our table: "Ralph is 70 today - come celebrate from 2-4 pm." Oh! We crashed the owner's birthday party!

Just when our food came, heaping plates of sandwiches, a bowl of potato salad, a plate of deviled eggs and some chocolates were placed on the table. The party food looked really good, but it didn't feel right to eat the birthday food, even if they had plenty. Our food was fine - typical bar food. We hurried up so the party people could have a place to sit.

This was a nice little bar and grill and very typical for western Wisconsin. Everyone knows everyone and they all stare at you when you walk in because you aren't from there. But they are friendly and when they see you just want some food and drinks, you are easily welcomed.
