Wailuku River Waterfalls Feb 16, 2009
If you are in Hilo for a lunch stop on your way to volcano, Rainbow Falls is a quick jaunt off the beaten path. It is most beautiful in the morning, when the sun hits it (yes, it gets sunny in Hilo sometimes) and can make rainbows.

There is a small park and a paved path to the viewing area. On the other side of the parking lot is an unpaved trail which leads to a swimming hole and viewing area above the falls. This area is not safe, but it is very scenic.

Coming into Hilo from the north on Hwy 19, the road will curve toward town and a stoplight just after the 'Singing Bridge'. The curve will put you onto Waianuenue Street. Go straight through the stoplight and up the hill. Eventually you will hit a fork in the road, which has a sign toward Rainbow Falls to the right. Follow signs.
