Railway Museum Ambarawa Reviews
Unique Indonesian Railway Museum Oct 10, 2005
The town Ambarawa was an important administrative centre for Central Java during the Dutch occupation. It was known as Willem 1 and had a large military camp of the KNIL (Royal Dutch East Indies Army). The camp was connected with Yogyakarta and Semarang through railway. There’s also a cog railway to supply the mountainous area around Ambarawa. Nowadays the railway is only in use for tourists, mainly local tourists.
The train station named Willem 1 is well preserved and functions as a railway museum. This is a must see museum for train lovers. The little steam train still runs for tourists. It’s a really nice ride through rice fields and rural area and doesn’t cost much.
