Radisson Blu Resort & Thalasso Djerba Reviews
Nice , but not 5* Jun 30, 2013
Radisson Blu Resort & Thalasso Djerba is a 5* hotel located in the tourist zone in Djerba. 10 minutes by taxi from the “capital” Houmt Souk and a good 20 minutes by taxi from the airport. It is located directly at the beach.
Due to the 3,5 hour delay on my flight from Paris I didn´t arrive the hotel until 1 am. The check-in procedures were already prepared, so I had my key in no time and could go directly to my room and to sleep.
The room was large with two lovely beds put together, a large desk, flat screen TV and a nice sitting area in front of the balcony. The room was nicely decorated with a touch of the Middle East. The marble floor tiles gave the room a cool feeling. It was good since the AC worked, but not extremely well. When I took the key card out of the little slot, when I left the room, the AC was turned off. Wi-fi was free and worked well. It was only necessary to log on once. From the balcony I had a nice view of the pools.
The bathroom and toilet were in two separate rooms. The toilet was small, but the bathroom was nice. It had a big mirror, a bathtub and a walk in shower. Slippers, bathrobes and some amenities were there as well. The bathroom was decorated in sand coloured marble tiles. Unfortunately, it wasn´t very clean.
Radisson Blu Resort & Thalasso Djerba is a city in itself. You can spend a holiday there without leaving the hotel. There are three outdoor pools (unfortunately not heated, so the water was cold), two indoor pools, a jacuzzi, a gym, a spa, a hairdresser, several shops and several restaurants and bars with both indoor and outdoor seating. High season starts in July. I guess that was why not all the restaurants were open. The culinary choices were Zafferano, a southern Italian bistro, Flamingo with Tunesian and Moroccan cuisine, Turquoise café-bar-restaurant serving Italian food at lunch and Asian at dinner and the Céramique buffet restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. The hotel has a beach with a bar (Zanzibar) right in front of it. An amazing breakfast buffet was included in the room rate, which was great!
Radisson Blu Resort & Thalasso Djerba has all the facilities a 5* hotel should have, but there were way too many little things that wasn´t 5*. The cleanliness was not very good, the complimentary water bottles were replaced only once in 9 days, the amenities in the bathroom were never refilled, the plug in the bathtub was missing so not possible to take a bath, cigarette butts were laying around in the hallways, if I took something from the minibar I had to call to have it filled up again, it didn´t happen automatically, service was generally good everywhere except in the reception. The reception staff was not very helpful, English was hardly spoken and some of them had an attitude problem. They certainly managed to make me feel like a problem since I didn´t speak French. Some were even rude. A couple of guys, not part of the reception staff, were hanging around the lobby every morning “attacking” people trying to get them to book activities. This felt very uncomfortable.
On the second day I asked if it was possible to change the room. I would like to move from the basement to a higher floor. I guest I asked the wrong guy, because I was scolded for asking and told that I had booked a room category that was in the basement. First of all, it was just a question from my part and second, how can I know where they have the different types of rooms.
I had been recommended a restaurant by a colleague, so I asked in the reception if they could help me find it. One just shook his head and looked at his colleague, who also shook her had. She searched in the computer, but shook her head again. I went to my room and googled it – got several hits right away. Another day I had booked a couple of activities and was told that I could charge them to my room. In the evening they called from the reception saying that I had to come right away and pay for the activities in cash!
For €100 a night it was value for money, but they have quite a way to go to call themselves a 5* hotel. The reception staff really needs to work on customer service.
