Radisson Blu Plaza Resort Phuket Panwa Beach Reviews
phuket's best-kept secret! Sep 11, 2015
Just got back from a short getaway there. Chanced across the Radisson after looking at a couple of affordable hotels along the quiet Panwa Beach area (ie. Kantary Bay, Cape Panwa Hotel, etc) pictures on their website most definitely do NOT do it justice! We fell in love with it the moment we stepped into the room. This is going to be a lengthy one ;)
Take the metered red-and-yellow cabs on the far right side of the airport. It costed us 500baht to get from the airport to the resort. We thought it was pretty decent and affordable for the distance travelled. (Radisson is located at the southern tip of phuket)
Upon arrival, they ushered us to the seating area where a welcome drink and cold towels are handed to us while we waited for them to process the check-in. The whole check-in process didn't even require us to stand or walk over to the counter! Documents were brought over to us on the comfy couches and we signed the normal papers and are personally shown to our rooms by the same person handling our check-in. You'd think that's Thai hospitality at its best, but there's more to come ;)
We got the cheapest available room in the resort and so weren't expecting much. But once we stepped in, we got blown away altogether again. The cheapest available room was already so luxurious and spacious. Floors were clean, tiles at the walkway, toilet, bathroom and vanity area and wooden flooring for the bed area. No crummy carpets!
Sorry for the lack of proper pics, we got too excited exploring to take proper photos. There's a huge open wardrobe area where you can hang your clothes, shoe rack, safe, shelves and drawers (bathrobe and slippers provided!) The bathroom (consists of vanity counter, bathtub, and a separate shower area with rainshower!!) is separated from the toilet (has it's own room). We even had a patio with a daybed and coffee table. Everything was too good to be true.
With all that said, location is a bit off the main roads and beach attractions and cabs are definitely way too pricey in Phuket. You can make use of the resort's complimentary shuttle services to save some money. Note that they only have two buses out of the resort (10am and 2pm) make sure to be at the pick-up point 5-10mins before or call the front desk to make a reservation at least 2hrs before. The bus mainly shuttles between the resort, Central Festival mall and Phuket Town.
IMPORTANT!!: Be at the pick-up points (at the mall or town) 10mins before time stated on the schedule given as they don't usually come on time. On the first day, the shuttle came 30mins after scheduled time. And on the second day, (thinking they'd be late again, we arrived at the pick-up point 2mins late and) we sat there for an hour waiting before resigning to the fact that the shuttle has left without us, even though we registered to be picked up at 535pm. And went into the mall to pass some time before going out again to wait for the 735pm bus. True enough, the bus was there 5mins before scheduled time and departed on the dot. It was a bit frustrating but it's a complimentary service afterall, so no complaining.
They also have a paid shuttle bus that goes to Patong beach at 7ish and returns back to the hotel at 11ish for 350baht one-way. They provide cab services to the popular beaches/attractions/areas but they cost a bomb. Try walking across the road, there's a small counter and a guy there to quote you prices for the destinations you want to go to. Always bargain! There's also a convenience store, some places offering tours, ATM, and some food places across the road.
Back to the resort.. amenities and services include: Free wifi (ask counter for user and pass upon check-in), access to all public infinity pools, deck chairs, sea, pool bar, gym, etc. Kayaks and windsurfing equipment available for free when the tide is in. (On our first day it was low tide and the water recedes all the way out, didn't look very nice. But the next couple of days the tide came in and it was pretty all the way!) Also note that they provide free introductory diving sessions on Tues, Thurs and Sats, 1pm-3pm. As we only found that out on our last day, you'd have to check with resort staff for more information.
Service standards of the staff there? Impeccable! We were always greeted with smiles, questions of how we are enjoying our stay, conversations are easy to strike up with any of the friendly staff there. As we had a late flight out, we went to the front desk to ask if we could have a late checkout and the manager on duty handled it really well. We were told that our room was reserved after our 12pm checkout time but they would arrange another for us to stay in until 6pm at no extra charge. The next couple of days, he would remember us and wave a hello or ask how our trip is going, etc and once even ran after us to let us know that they've arranged the room beside ours (for convenience) for us to move to after checking out from our room. They offered the best service I've ever experienced in my life so far (and I'm not exaggerating :))
Panwa View Point and the Aquarium is an easy 10-15mins stroll from the resort. Exit the resort and turn left, follow the road all the way through til you reach a bend, that's the viewpoint. Walk further up and you'll see the Phuket Aquarium sign. Try to go early as the aquarium closes at 4pm and the road is dark and quiet in evenings/nights.
Check-out was an easy process. Room service, drinks at the (pool)bar, restaurant bill, tours to islands and cabs arranged by hotel, etc can be charged to your room and total will be presented to you in the checkout bill. You have the option of paying in Thai baht or credit card. We pushed our luck a little and asked if we could pay half in baht (our leftover baht from the trip) and the rest in credit card and to our surprise, the staff said yes and did it cheerily with a smile.
Thank you Radisson, you've made our trip a really memorable one and we'll definitely be back soon! :)
